Gerald Sloan joined the UA music faculty in 1970, where he is currently Professor of Music. He has taught low brass, jazz studies, and music history (including Jazz History, Latin American Music, and 20th Century Music). He has also directed the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, The Trombone Ensemble, and various jazz ensembles.
Prof. Sloan was principal trombone with the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra for a number of years. He also performed with the Music Festival of Arkansas, The Fort Smith Symphony Orchestra, The Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and The Chamber Orchestra of the Ozarks. He is currently very active with the Boston Mountain Brassworks (the UA resident faculty brass quintet) and with the Fayetteville Jazz Collective. Other performance credits include Lawrence Welk, Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass, The Temptations, Bob Hope, and Marian McPartland, as well as numerous traveling Broadway shows.
Sloan's articles on trombone and jazz have appeared in many publications, including "The Instrumentalist," "Latin Beat," and "Jazz Journal International." He served twice on the faculty of the International Trombone Workshop and was invited to speak at the International Trombone Festival in 2004. His book, "Orchestral Recordings for Low Brass Players," was published in 1997 by Encore Music Publishers. A duo CD, "Squirrel Fishing," featuring Jon Barrios on bass, was released in 2007 on Lift Records.
