JUDGE BIOGRAPHIES

Pavlina Dokovska is a First Prize winner of the Claude Debussy International Competition in France and Italy's International Piano Competition of Senigallia. Pavlina’s concert tours have taken her to Europe, the Far East and throughout the United States. Known for her insightful and caring teaching methods which have produced many a competition winner, Ms. Dokovska joined the faculty of the Mannes College of Music in New York in 1995. Three years later she was elected Chair of the Piano Department, a position she holds to date. In 1999 she founded and became artistic director of the annual Mannes Festival which grew into a staple of New York's musical life with about 20 concerts at some of the city's major venues. Her discography includes recordings on GegaNew, Labor, Arcadia, Koch International, and RCA. Pavlina Dokovska was born in Bulgaria where she studied with Lydia Kuteva and graduated from the Music Academy of Sofia as a student of Julia and Constantin Ganev. After further studies with Yvonne Lefebure in Paris, she completed her Master of Music Degree at the Juilliard School in New York as a student of Beveridge Webster.

Ryo Yanagitani has distinguished himself as one of Canada's most promising young concert artists.  He recently garnered the silver medal at the Dr. Luis Sigall International Piano Competition in Vina del Mar, Chile.  In addition, he is a laureate of the Hilton Head International Piano Competition and a number of other international piano competitions.  He is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the Yale School of Music under the tutelage of Boris Berman.  Ryo has obtained a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance from the University of British Columbia, and an Artist Diploma from the Cleveland Institute under Sergei Babayan.  Ryo has made concerto appearances with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra, Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, and the Moroccan Symphony Orchestra among others.  He has been in demand as a chamber musician, with eminent artists such as flutist Ransom Wilson.  Ryo has received many scholarships and awards from such groups as the Canadian Arts Council and the Arthur Foote Scholarship from the Harvard Musical Association.

Jura Margulis has been recognized for his compellingly communicative performances, as well as for the range of his tonal palette and his consummate virtuosity.  Reviewers from the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung have praised his artistry, noting the “absolute authority” of his interpretations.  His orchestral appearances include performances with the Russian National Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, the National Orchestra of Venezuela, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra.  Margulis’ solo appearances include recitals at the Beppu Music Festival in Japan, the Berliner Festwochen, and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, as well as recent performances in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, New Orleans, and Los Angeles in the US, as well as performances in Europe and Asia.  He has recorded seven CDs.  He regularly gives piano master classes in the US and abroad.   Jura Margulis is the inaugural holder of the McAllister Professorship in Piano at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
